I just had an interview to work as a program counselor at the Aspen Grove Family Camp. I've only been interviewed for a job once in my life, and I was a shoo-in for that job. Needless to say I was nervous. However, I do think it went pretty well (with the exception of two or three weakish points...).
It started off great because one of ladies that would be interviewing me (THERE WERE THREE PEOPLE IN THERE) was waiting outside while they interviewed someone else. I got to sit down and chat with her in a more personable way. I asked her about her job and if she liked it. I asked where she lived. I asked what her degree from BYU was. I asked her if she would hire me. (Just kidding about the last one!) But I thought that was awesome that I got a little informal face time.
Here's where mistake number one pops up. I went in to get my interview and I shook everyone's hand -- but not Michelle's! It was a little awkward because she didn't stand up and said "We met outside" so I just said "it was nice meeting you out there!" weird, but not bad.
Then they asked me all sorts of personable question -- about my experience and how that experience would help me at Aspen. I gave a pretty short answer, but a good one. I caught myself fidgeting once -- I wonder if they noticed. (that was mistake number 2)
Mistake number 3: I said I didn't have experience programming -- I only had experience being around kids. So that could have been bad.
It ended pretty quickly and they didn't ask me any other major questions. Other than that I shook everyone's hands at the end. I smiled a lot. I asked pretty relevant questions.

Good parts: (aside from getting one on one Michelle time)
---One of the people interviewing me (Jim Dodds) broke out of the interview format to ask if I knew one of my professors -- which I did. And I said I'd pass on a message for him! That's a good thing.
----Jared (the main interviewer) said I looked familiar, and he wrote down the names of people I knew at Aspen.
---Michelle smiled a lot at the beginning and a few times in the middle.
--- I left feeling good -- which I'm happy about!
It was a pretty positive interview overall. I've decided that if they don't hire me, it's because they don't think I'm a good fit and not because I failed. I'm also positive that if I don't get hired, it's because the Lord has another plan for my summer! So all I can do now is wait (and doubt myself) -- but I'll keep you updated.

As much as I wanna be buds this summer, I hope the things you want happen for you!
ReplyDeletegood luck! :)
ReplyDeleteI hope you get it pal! It sounds like it went really well!
ReplyDeleteYou are so like me, identifying and listing out each maybe mistake, I love it. :) I'm sure you are going to get the job and if not it is for the best!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure things will work out. If those are your "mistakes,"then I think it was probably a pretty good interview.
